anything I can do, I can do better

did you ever suddenly improve a long-familiar skill for no apparent reason? you're grinding away at whatever it is you do, week by week, reasonably aware of your strengths and limitations. then one day, you're just... better at it. I've experienced it from time to time, my ability to perform this task or that quantum leaping at the moment I least expect it. after having twins, for example. Before shep & ruby popped out, I prepped myself for a sharp decline in most brain functions and, by extension, a drop in the quality of my reporting at work. imagine my shock when the opposite happened. I'm working all kinds of new story angles I didn't see before. how is that?

It's like adding dye to water one drop at a time. It looks like nothing's happening. The water appears unchanged. Suddenly it seems to burst into color. The change happens so slowly, we don't notice until it acquires some mass.
